Thursday's get no respect at all. Nobody looks forward to Thursday without saying its "closer to Friday" or "almost Friday" or "one more day to go". Nobody looks at Thursday for just Thursday. It made its mark on us all yesterday with the help of mother nature.
I am a native Floridian, native Tampon, as we say. Yesterday I was truly scared. It has been a long time since a storm has scared me like that one. I had to call Jimmy on the phone. The rain was gushing off the roof, the wind was blowing so hard the rain looked horizontal instead of falling straight down. When the 2 got together it was a scary sight. I was watching for tree limbs.
I have lived through the threat of many many hurricanes. I am one of those that doesn't take them very seriously. I don't have a hurricane box. I have candles from Cracker Barrel and Target for the purpose of smelling up the place not for illuminating it. I have bottled water because it was left over from a crop or a baseball afternoon. I have tuna because it was on sale bogo. I am not prepared for days or even hours of being power-less. So when the power went off yesterday I was beside myself with boredom. I couldn't internet. I couldn't read very well. I couldn't knit. I took a nap and when I was awake I thanked god for my DRoid! I could stay connected to the world out there!
I finally got in the car and just rode around looking for signs of the storm. The roads were a mess with leaves and sand all washed into the road. The golf course had a few branches down but not to bad where I went. I saw on TBO.com that a van was in the path of a tree falling down in Temple Terrace but I didn't see it.
I went to get the kids. Taylor was coming home as all after school activities were cancelled. Even Coach Mac couldn't get around that. We went to McDonalds as we do everyday but this time we went in and ate. They had electricity and we didn't. When we finally got home we managed to find 52 cards alike enough to play Rummy. Taylor hates Rummy because he isn't good at it and doesn't win. Rachel and I love Rummy for the same reason. 4 hands of that and he had 10 points. He was done. No amount of bribing from Rachel could get him to play anymore. I need to buy a Scrabble game for my non existant hurrican box.
After Rachel left we decided it was time for (another for me anyway) nap. I fiddled with my phone a while and dozed off. I woke up to the sound of the refrigerator coming on and lights! My 6 1/2 hr ordeal was finally over.
We had electricity but we ordered Chinese. My book club had been postponed until next week. It finally stopped raining. I reset all the clocks.
I am thankful that power was all I lost. We had no property damage or tree damage as some did. My power came back on last night. I have friends who didn't get power all night. Some of them have small kids. All in all I have no place to complain.
It is supposed to be a beautiful Friday.
